An 18th-century tavern at the heart of Anglesey’s maritime and automotive history.
Steeped in nearly 300 years of maritime heritage, The Ship Inn is the most historic waterfront tavern at Red Wharf Bay (Traeth Coch), Anglesey. Originally constructed in 1740 as a humble row of mariners' cottages, our building has served as a vital sanctuary for sailors and shipwrights for centuries. One of our earliest recorded residents was a local mariner named Richard Roberts, who lived here with his wife Elizabeth as far back as 1754. Today, we remain a traditional British free houseand a welcoming community hub, preserved in character and dedicated to the timeless appeal of renowned real alesand high-quality, locally sourced Welsh produce. Whether you are finishing a trek on the Anglesey Coastal Path or visiting the birthplace of the Land Rover, you are stepping into a piece of living history.
The birth place of the Land Rover
The Ship Inn holds a unique place in global automotive history. In 1947, Maurice Wilks, the Chief Engineer of Rover, used the expansive sands of our bay as a giant drawing board.
He sketched the original silhouette of the Land Rover in the sand. This was a moment that changed the world of 4x4 vehicles forever.
To this day, Land Rover enthusiasts from across the globe visit us as a point of pilgrimage to walk the beach where the Series 1 concept was born.
We celebrate this heritage in our dedicated Land Rover-themed room. This space is filled with the story, memorabilia and charm, making it a one-of-a-kind setting for your next gathering.
